Pro Se Legal Advocacy

In empowering others, we empower ourselves. In improving opportunity, we lift each other up. Through impacting lives, we honor the humanity that unites us all.

At SCARC Guardianship Services, we support each person’s right to self-determination.  Each person’s right to be in control of his/her own life is vital to feeling empowered, free, happy and satisfied.  Sometimes, reaching the goal of empowerment, freedom and happiness requires the assistance of a parent, sibling or professional who understands their loved one’s goals, dreams and needs.

SCARC Guardianship’s Pro Se Legal Advocacy Program assists families in becoming Guardian so they can be there every step of the way helping their loved one achieve their own dreams and goals.

Pro se is a Latin phrase meaning “for oneself” and is used as a legal term to describe representing oneself in the judicial system. In the guardianship process, this means the person who files the legal proceedings for guardianship (usually the parent or family member), also known as the plaintiff or petitioner, will petition the court without hiring an attorney.

Our agency has assisted over 1200 families with this process.

Assisting families in Sussex, Hudson, Morris, Passaic, and Warren counties, SCARC Guardianship Services, Inc. works to make an overwhelming and confusing process more manageable. Families working with our Pro Se Legal Advocacy Program are able to obtain guardianship of their family member at a greatly reduced rate. Additionally, SCARC Guardianship Services, Inc. can assist income-eligible families with all or some of the fees.

Our agency will guide you through the process by providing you with information about the necessary steps and documents from start to finish. When your child is 17 ½ years of age or older, please contact SCARC Guardianship Services, Inc. for an application to begin the guardianship process. Families working with SCARC Guardianship Services, Inc. staff are carefully guided through the process and are grateful for the professional and personal services provided.
